Roush Fenway Racing has announced the signing of Matt Kenseth to a multiyear contract to remain with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team.

Kenseth, the 2003 Cup champion, has driven for the organization since 1998 and collected 16 Cup wins.

His contract was reportedly set to expire after the 2009 season.

“We’ve had a lot of success together, including a championship, and I’m really proud of that,” Kenseth said in a statement Thursday. “I’m looking forward to the next few years and winning another championship with Roush Fenway.”

Kenseth is one of only two drivers (Jimmie Johnson being the other) who has qualified for the Chase For The Sprint Cup since the inception of the so-called playoff system in 2004.

“Matt Kenseth is a champion in every sense of the word and [co-owner] John Henry and I are proud to have him in our stable of drivers,” team co-owner Jack Roush said. “Over the last 11 years, Matt has been a leader in our organization and a voracious competitor on track, and to know that he will continue on in that role with Roush Fenway is gratifying.”

Only way I'd see him leaving would be if he retired.

I think in a few years Jack will give him the Burton treatment.

He'd have to lose the sponsor first, and do you think DeWalt will leave?  Wink

No, I think when Jack moves the 26 to Yates he'll do this. With him having younger drivers coming up, they need a place. First Biffle might get the boot, but maybe two years after that Matt might need to be looking out.

That makes me think of a possibility. Colin Braun will probably be Greg's replacement when he retires, and then when Erik Darnell is ready, he can replace Kenseth after he retires or when he gets the boot - whichever comes first. I think Matt could get the boot because he has developed an attitude lately, and I haven't been fond of him.
